The First-Ever BMW XM

September 28th, 2022 by

The worlds of X and M collide with the first-ever production SUV built from the ground up specifically by BMW M. Built with the same drivetrain as BMW’s new bespoke endurance racecar, the BMW XM unleashes high performance in a form never experienced before.

The BMW XM announces its presence with a bold reinterpretation of the iconic twin headlights and BMW M kidney grill. Smooth surfaces and sharp edges bely the power and performance that lurks beneath. Vertically stacked hexagonal tailpipes at the rear and flared wheel arches further accent the XM. Wheels come standard at 23-inches while 22-inch M aerodynamic wheels are available as an option. The XM also features seven available paint shades as well as access to over 50 BMW Individual paint finishes. The highlight color is NightGold Metallic, which finishes the kidney grill and diffuser elements with NightGold.

On the inside, drivers are greeted by a massive BMW Curved Display seamlessly connecting the instrument cluster to the information display. Carbon fiber finishes hint at the XM’s motorsport heritage. Rear passengers are welcomed into an exclusive M Lounge. Deep recess seating for three, diamond quilting finishes, and bold color and material choices create an inviting atmosphere. The Sculptural Headliner provides a dramatic finishing touch. Three-dimensional Alcantara and fiber-optic lighting creates constant dynamic light effects depending on the situation and selected driving mode. In addition to Merino leather and Nappa leather interiors, the XM is also available with Vintage Coffee Merino. This new addition highlights the natural characteristics of the soft Nappa leather, creating a uniquely individual finish on every application.

The heart of the XM is its newly developed M HYBRID system. Borrowing this system from BMW’s new Le Mans racecar, this system features a 483 horsepower 4.4-liter M TwinPower Turbo V8 paired with a 194 horsepower electric motor. Combined output reaches 644 horsepower and 590 ft-lb of torque. This fifth-generation BMW eDrive motor is paired directly with the 8-speed M Steptronic transmission and includes an innovative pre-gearing stage. This system allows for near instantaneous torque delivery and 0 to 60 time of just 4.1 seconds and top speed of up to 168 mph. The electric motor can be used exclusively for up to 30 miles and has a max speed of 87 mph.

The XM receives an M xDrive system similar to the M5. The rear-biased setup provides maximum traction in all driving situations. For more spirited driving, a 4WD Sport mode disables DSC and sends even more power to the rear for M-typical handling in dynamic driving situations. A 4WD Sand mode is also available that provides enhanced traction on sandy or other low traction surfaces. The Drivetrain also features an electronically controlled M Sport differential and model-specific rear axle differential to handle the high torque of the M HYBRID system.

Following the launch of the BMW XM in the first quarter of 2023, BMW will unveil the first in a planned lineup of BMW XM Label models. The BMW XM Label Red will be available for a limited production run and features over 735 horsepower and 735 lb-ft of torque as well as unique paint, wheel, upholstery, and trim selections.

The BMW XM starts production at the end of 2022 at Plant Spartanburg in South Carolina. Base MSRP starts at $159,000. Pre-orders are currently open.
