BMW Sustainability in Battery Development

BMW is committed to bringing a sustainable automotive future to luxury drivers in Los Angeles and Hollywood. That’s why the batteries being developed for BMW vehicles are constructed with sustainable power.

At this time, the Leipzig plant is powered by four wind turbines and has been since 2013. In addition, the San Luis Potosi plant in Mexico uses energy from large-scale solar installations nearby. And in 2024, battery production will be contracted to a Swedish company called Northvolt. The battery cells will be produced with local wind and hydro power.

BMW Battery Suppliers and the Global Supply Chain

What is the new battery technology for electric cars? It comes from a concerted effort from BMW outposts worldwide. Here’s our guide to the international electric focus of BMW:

  • Plant Dingolfing: They’re the Competence Center for E-Drive Production, manufacturing battery modules, high-voltage batteries, and electric motors for battery-electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids.
  • Plant Spartanburg: In South Carolina, this plant doubled battery production in 2019 as part of the manufacturing process of the BMW X3 and X5 plug-in hybrid models.
  • Plant Leipzig: This location was responsible for making the BMW i3 as well as the battery modules for fifth-gen EVs.
  • Plant Regensburg: With the help of a special coating process, batteries produced here have increased strength and thermal conductivity.
  • Plant Landshut: This plant manufactured the electric motor for the BMW i3 and uses recycled aluminum to build the e-drive housing.
  • BMW Brilliance Automotive Plant: In Shenyang, fifth-generation eDrive technology and battery modules are created.
  • Plant Rayong: In a partnership with the Dräxlmaier Group, high-voltage batteries come from this plant in Thailand.
