The First-Ever BMW M5 CS

When the BMW M5 was first introduced in 1985, it had a simple formula. BMW took a high-power motorsport engine and stuffed it into a luxury sedan to create what could only be described as the Ultimate Driving Machine. With the launch of the 2022 BMW M5 CS, that formula remains the same with one adjustment: weight. More power and less weight make the M5 CS the fastest, most powerful street-legal vehicle BMW has ever produced.

The heart of the new M5 CS is its 4.4-liter M TwinPower turbo V8. Output is increased to 627 horsepower, a 10 hp increase over the previous Competition model. Torque remains the same at 553 lb-ft, but is available at a wider torque range. As a result, 0-60 time decreases to a mere 2.9 seconds.

The chassis of the M5 CS takes everything great from the M5 Competition Package and makes it better. Stiffer engine mounts, firmer springs, lower right height, increased negative camber, and firmer anti-roll bars make for a very high dynamic suspension. Further Dynamic Damper control tuning allow the M5 CS to truly take advantage of its lower ride height and available Pirelli P Zero Corsa high-performance tires.

Weight savings come mainly from the extensive use of carbon fiber reinforced plastic. Exterior components made of CFRP include the roof, hood with vents, front splitter, mirror caps, rear diffuser, and rear spoiler. The kidney grille surround, model badging, and 20-inch forged light allow wheels are all finished in Gold Bronze to further separate the M5 CS from other M5 variants. The Adaptive LED headlights also feature L-shaped surrounds illuminated in racing-inspired yellow for an extra motorsport touch.

On the inside, the first thing you will notice is the unique four seat configuration. Black Merino leather with Mugello red accents adorn both Driver and passenger front seats as well as the two rear bucket seats. All four headrests are imprinted with a map of the legendary Nurburging Nordschleife track, which was integral in the development of the M5 CS. The interior is finished with an M Alcantara stern wheel with red trim as well as an Alcantara headliner.

The M5 CS comes in three colors. The standard color is Brands Hatch grey metallic. The two optional BMW Individual colors are Frozen Brands Hatch grey metallic and Frozen Deep Green metallic.

Quantities of the M5 CS will be extremely limited. It will only be available for the 2022 model year. Product begins in the second half of 2021 and the M5 CS will retail for $142,000.
