The BMW i4 eDrive40 and i4 M50
The BMW i is growing the addition of the BMW i4 eDrive40 and M50. The two sporty four doors combine the functionality and space of the grand coupe design with the electric performance of BMW’s latest 5th generation eDrive. The i4 M50 also becomes the first fully-electric model from BMW M.
Th hear of the BMW i4 is the new eDrive system. Two electric motors, one in the front and one in the back, provide power to an electric system. In the eDrive40, this rear wheel drive system makes 335 horsepower with an estimated range up to 300 miles. The i4 M50 gets an all wheel drive setup that makes 536 horsepower and has an estimated range up to 245 miles.
Because of the battery system, both versions feature a center of gravity that is 1.3-inches (BMW i4 M50) or 2.1-inches (BMW i4 eDrive40) lower than its gasoline engined 3 series counterpart. This leads to improved driving dynamics. Both versions are equipped with an all new near-actuator wheel slip limitation. In the eDrive40, this system is tuned to bring rear wheel drive performance to the electric platform. In the M50, it is tuned for optimum rear-biased torque distribution.
The BMW i4 is scheduled to go into production at the end of the year for a 2022 market launch. The BMW i4 eDrive40 starts at $55,400 and the i5 M50 starts at $65,900. Pre-orders are now available for both the i4 and iX.
