The All-New 2021 BMW M3 and M4
Since the release of the G20 BMW 3 Series and G22 BMW 4 Series, anticipation has been high for the M variants. They finally arrive for the 2021 model year with the uncompromised street and track capabilities that the M3 and M4 badge have been known for for over 30 years.
The first thing you will probably notice is the larger kidney grille borrowed from the all-new BMW 4 Series. This larger intake means increased airflow and cooling for the more powerful engine. The body also features wider body panels, a longer wheel base, and a carbon fiber roof.
Power comes from the newly developed S58 inline 6-cylinder engine. The M3 and M4 make 473 horsepower and 406 lb-ft of torque, a 48 hp bump from the previous generation. Acceleration from 0-60 takes a mere 4.1 seconds. The all-new Competition models increase power to 503 hp and 479 lb-ft or torque, knocking another three tenths of a second off of the 0-60 time. Rear-wheel drive and a 6-speed manual transmission will remain as a standard option as well as an 8-speed M Steptronic transmission.
For the first time ever in an M3 or M4, M xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive will be available as an option for Competition models starting summer 2021. This rear-biased system uses an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch as well as an Active M differential to transfer power between the front and rear axles. Torque is directed to the rear wheels under normal conditions and only transferred forward when traction is required, maintaining a classic rear-wheel drive experience.
The suspension of the M3 and M4 have also been upgraded over their standard model counterparts. The standard Adaptive M suspension with electronically controlled shock absorbers offer increased handling without the comfort tradeoff. A new M integrated braking system offers two driver-selected settings for brake pedal feel. The optional M Drive Professional features an M Traction Control system that offers 10 stages of adjustable wheel slip limitation.
Making its debut in the M3 and M4 are the optional electric front M Carbon bucket seats. Combining racing functionality and lightweight design, these seats save 21 pounds over the standard M sport seats. These seats can also be used with a multi-point seat belt for superior safety in track driving.
The 2021 BMW M3 starts at $69,900 and the M4 starts at $71,800. Both models are set to arrive in March 2021.
