HOW THE ACTIVE KIDNEY GRILLE IN 2018 BMW 7 SERIES WORKS

October 13th, 2017 by

The 2018 BMW 7 Series is the pinnacle of the BMW sports sedans, giving its owners high-levels of driving enjoyment, luxury and technological sophistication. The new 7 Series also comes equipped with a multitude of advanced performance features, including the Active Kidney Grille. Read more to see how it works.

2018 BMW 7 Series Active Kidney Grille Features

The main benefits of the Active Kidney Grille in the 7 Series are engine cooling and aerodynamics. The Active Kidney Grille has bars and flaps in the lower air intake that automatically swing open whenever additional cooling air is required. This system activates depending on several temperature thresholds as well as the speed of the vehicle. For example, during the warming-up phase and when operating at low loads, the BMW Active Kidney Grille is closed completely to maximize the aerodynamic efficiency.

Air Curtains and Air Breather of 2018 BMW 3 Series

The 2018 BMW Series also comes with two other unique efficiency-enhancing features — the Air Curtains and Air Breather in the front apron and side fenders. The Air Curtain accelerates the energy-rich air flow before the front apron and guides it past the side of the wheel arch, while the Air Breather guides the air flow into the front wheel arch via a vertical air inlet through the side fender. Together they provide more efficient aerodynamics allowing air to be carefully directed out of the wheel arches, which reduces the turbulence around the wheels.
