July 1st, 2026 by

BMW has officially revealed the fifth-generation X5, introducing a bold redesign, cutting-edge technology, and the broadest range of powertrains ever offered in the brand’s iconic Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV). First launched in 1999, the X5 helped define the luxury SUV segment, and the newest model aims to continue that legacy by blending performance, innovation, and electrification.

The headline announcement is the debut of the BMW iX5, the first fully electric version of the X5. Built on BMW’s latest sixth-generation eDrive technology, the iX5 60 xDrive delivers an estimated 435 miles of range (EPA estimate pending), an advanced 800-volt electrical architecture, and ultra-fast DC charging of up to 460 kW. The SUV also introduces bidirectional charging capabilities, allowing owners to power their homes, devices, or even another electric vehicle directly from the battery.

For drivers who prefer other powertrain options, BMW is offering more choice than ever before. The new X5 lineup includes mild-hybrid gasoline models, a plug-in hybrid variant, the all-electric iX5, and a hydrogen fuel-cell model planned for a later release. This diverse portfolio reflects BMW’s strategy of giving customers multiple pathways toward electrification while continuing to support traditional internal combustion engines.

The new X5 also adopts BMW’s Neue Klasse design philosophy, featuring a cleaner exterior, redesigned illuminated kidney grille, distinctive double-X lighting signature, and sleek new “Winglet” door handles that improve both aesthetics and aerodynamics. Inside, the cabin has been completely reimagined with premium materials, expansive ambient lighting, and BMW’s latest Panoramic iDrive system powered by Operating System X. A panoramic display spanning the base of the windshield, paired with a large central touchscreen, creates a more immersive and driver-focused digital experience.

Performance remains a core focus. Gas-powered models receive an updated turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six engine with 48-volt mild-hybrid technology, producing up to 394 horsepower. Meanwhile, the dual-motor iX5 generates 570 horsepower and can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in an estimated 4.4 seconds, demonstrating that electrification doesn’t come at the expense of driving excitement. BMW has also refined the suspension, steering, and chassis systems to deliver improved comfort and handling across the lineup.

Production of the new X5 will continue at BMW’s Spartanburg, South Carolina plant, which also becomes the company’s first U.S. facility to manufacture an all-electric vehicle with the iX5. The 2027 BMW X5 40 xDrive is scheduled to arrive in late 2026, with additional gasoline, plug-in hybrid, and electric variants following in early 2027. With its expanded technology, diverse powertrain lineup, and modern design, the next-generation X5 positions itself as one of the most versatile luxury SUVs BMW has ever produced.
